Michael Steele loses his first big race

Apr 24, 2009 - The DNC’s new web ad, “Broken Steele,” focuses on Michael Steele’s first big failure: losing the special election in New York’s 20th congressional district, an election he said the GOP should be able to win.

OBAMA EFFECT: Dem wins special election in GOP stronghold

Apr 24, 2009 - It’s now official: Democratic newcomer Scott Murphy has defeated well-known Republican state legislator Jim Tedisco in New York’s 20th Congressional District, a traditionally Republican seat vacated when Kirsten Gillibrand was appointed to the U.S. Senate. Murphy trailed Tedisco until late in the election, but Tedisco’s outspoken opposition to President Obama’s economic package was unpopular with voters, giving Murphy an issue that he rode to victory.

Olbermann responds to Fox’s attacks on MSNBC

Apr 24, 2009 - For the past few days, Fox has been hypocritically attacking MSNBC over an interview on Countdown in which Janeane Garafalo said teabaggers were racists. Now, they’ve actually sent in a producer for the O’Reilly show to a GE shareholders meeting as a publicity stunt to amplify their attacks. Last night, Keith Olbermann responded:

Fox to MSNBC: Left is racist against black conservatives

Apr 24, 2009 - This is pretty funny: at the same time that Fox is howling with anger at MSNBC for airing an interview in which Janeane Garafalo accused teabaggers of racism, Glenn Beck and one of his guests make the exact same accusation — only this time, it’s against the political left. Watch:

Loony GOP threat: Texas could split into 5 states, add 6 new right-wing senators “overnight”

Apr 24, 2009 - Texas Republican Congressman John Culberson apparently hasn’t read the U.S. Constitution, because he thinks Texas can split into five separate states whenever it wants, changing the political balance in the U.S. Senate “overnight.”

They tortured to justify Iraq war

Apr 23, 2009 - Keith Olbermann reports on the most stunning revelation yet about Bush’s torture program: one of its key goals was to fish for links between Iraq and 9/11 to help build the case for war. Discussing the issue with Olbermann was Jonathan Landay, the McClatchy reporter who first wrote about the torture fishing expedition.

Bush proves Rove and Fox are lying about torture

Apr 23, 2009 - Over the past couple of days, Karl Rove and Fox News have offered a new argument in defense of the Bush administration’s torture policies. Now, they say, waterboarding Khalid Sheikh Mohammed (KSM) yielded intelligence that led to the disruption of an al Qaeda plot to attack the tallest building in Los Angeles, the Library Tower (which both Bush and Rove called the Liberty Tower, for some reason). There’s just one problem with Rove’s new story: it couldn’t possibly be true. As Timothy Noah pointed out in Slate, the Los Angeles attack was foiled in February of 2002. KSM was not captured until March of 2003, however — more than a year later. It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to figure out that timeline is impossible. Perhaps appropriately, then, here’s a video of George W. Bush — in his own words — proving that Karl Rove and Fox News are lying about torture:

Apr 21, 2009 - Powerful stuff from Big Ed Schultz:

Rush excuses domestic abuse to defend torture

Apr 21, 2009 - Via Media Matters, it looks like the GOP’s leader wants to steal the spotlight back from Glenn Beck. Here he is, saying the Obama administration’s definition of torture reminds him of the definition of psychological abuse against women. Of course, in Rush’s screwed up world, that means torture is okay. Listen (transcript below):

Pelosi’s first comments on Harman wiretap story

Apr 21, 2009 - Nancy Pelosi denies any detailed knowledge of the Jane Harman wiretap story, calling her a “valued member of Congress”:

Now Cheney wants all illegal torture memos declassified

Apr 21, 2009 - In a strange twist that Dick Cheney may come to regret, the former Vice President is now calling for the declassification of all information related to his illegal torture program:

Obama open to prosecuting architects of Bush torture policy

Apr 21, 2009 - Today, President Obama opened the door to prosecuting Bush administration officials responsible for devising illegal torture polices. While reiterating his belief that CIA officers who carried out so-called “enhanced interrogations” should not be prosecuted, the President said he wanted the Attorney General to make a determination on how to procede with “those who formulated those legal decisions.” Obama said that any potential investigation must be bipartisan and independent. Apr 21, 2009 - CNN reports: National Democrats will release a new Web video Tuesday criticizing two House Republican leaders who have disparaged President Obama’s budget plan. The Democratic National Committee accuses House Minority Leader John Boehner, R-Ohio, and House Minority Whip Eric Cantor, R-Virginia, of being hypocrites for voting for former President Bush’s budgets, but now publicly opposing Obama’s proposal. Here’s the new ad:

Limbaugh: Left-wing blogs accused me of teabaggery

Apr 20, 2009 - Is somebody developing a serious case of Glenn Beck-envy? On this clip captured by Media Matters, a caller accuses Limbaugh, Fox News, and other radio hosts of hyping last week’s tea bag parties. Limbaugh’s retort? That the caller was simple “regurgitating the drivel I have read on left-wing blogs” calling tea bag parties “nothing but a bunch of mind-numbed robots who were led there by svengalis and pied pipers like me. I had nothing to do with a single tea party.” Actually, Rush, most of us left-wing bloggers completely ignored you last week. Are you getting jealous?

Gingrich: U.S. presidents didn’t “smile and greet” Russians

Apr 20, 2009 - On The Today Show Monday morning, Newt “The Professor” Gingrich said President Obama’s handshake with Venezuela’s Hugo Chavez poses a grave threat to our national security. But one of his key claims — that American presidents didn’t “smile and greet” Russian dictators — was laughably false. Watch:
